The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is the international standard diagnostic coding classification system. Codes in this system are used to analyze the general health of the population, as well as monitor the incidence and prevalence of diseases and other health problems.
ICD-9 code sets have been in use since 1979; ICD-10 came into use in 1994. The U.S. is one of the few developed countries that have not transitioned to ICD-10. In January 2009, the Department of Health & Human Services established ICD-10 as the new U.S. coding standard and set an implementation date for October 1, 2013. Need more info?
