DETC accreditation is "certification by a recognized body that an institution has voluntarily undergone a comprehensive study and peer examination that has demonstrated that the institution does in fact meet the established standards."
Accreditation is a process that:
- Recognizes that a school meets specific standards
- Provides assurance to current and prospective students that it offers the quality of education it claims to offer
DETC accreditation provides a school with a nationally-recognized accreditation that covers all of its available distance education courses. The accreditation is based on the method of instruction, and covers all online courses and programs.
To become accredited, a school has to undergo an extensive inspection performed by an outside examining agency and submit instructional materials for a thorough review. The process is repeated every five years.
When you choose to enroll in a course or program, you want to make sure that you are getting the best education available - that you are spending your hard-earned money on an education that will be valued and recognized in the workplace.
By attending a DETC-accredited school, you have the assurance that the school:
- Has set educational goals for students who enroll
- Offers formal, organized learning experiences and services that enable students to meet these stated goals
- Can show that students and graduates have benefited from the learning experiences provided
Accreditation is the only reliable way to know that you are choosing a high-quality school. The rigorous qualification process "identifies and accredits distance education and training institutions that have attained and maintained the standards deemed necessary to operate at a high level of quality."
About the Accrediting Commission of the DETC
The DETC Accrediting Commission was established in 1955. It is recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education to accredit distance education institutions, and is listed by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) as a "nationally recognized accrediting agency." Like other regional accrediting agencies, the Accrediting Commission is reviewed periodically by the USDE to make certain that it meets the criteria for federal recognition as published in Title 34 of the Code of Federal Regulations.
The Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council is also a recognized member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), the leading non-governmental recognition for accrediting associations.
