- Effective October 1, 2013, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will require all ICD-9 code sets to be replaced by the ICD-10 code sets.
What do ICD-10 coders need to know?
- ICD-9-CM consists of more than 17,000 codes, while ICD-10-CM will contain more than 141,000 codes – this includes new codes for procedures and diagnoses.
- Medical coders, medical billers and other health care professionals will need to prepare to fully implement ICD-10 codes sets by October 1, 2013; this will require ICD-10 training prior to the deadline to ensure a firm grasp on the new code system.
- According to the AAPC, ICD-10 consists of:
- An alphabetized index for injury origins and diseases, table of drugs, chemical and external injury causes
- A tabular list containing codes and cause-of-death titles (Vol. 1)
- Specific coding rules, descriptions and guidelines ( Vol. 2)
- Exclusion and inclusion terms for cause-of-death titles (Vol. 1)
