Diversified Work Experience Helps Student Achieve Medical Coding Career

Cheryl Burch has held many titles in her life, gaining experience in many different fields, but what she really wanted was to be secure in her career.

Cheryl’s list of previous jobs include: bookkeeper, bar manager, business owner, and real estate broker. It was her job as a receptionist at a clinic that made the biggest impression on her to seek a medical career.

“I knew the medical industry was growing and wanted something that would carry me into retirement and offer me the chance in the future to work at home.”

Cheryl began to look for a medical coding program that was flexible enough for her busy schedule but could still offer her security in this growing field. For Cheryl, it was Allied’s “Pass or Don’t Pay” Promise that helped her decide to enroll in Allied’s Medical Coding Program. She knew that, if she put in the effort, she would pass the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam and it would open the door to a new career.

Since she didn’t know a great deal about medical coding, she wanted to make sure she was making the right choice, and the Allied Admissions Staff provided her with all of the information she needed. The application process went quickly and in no time at all she had all of her materials and information and was ready to begin. Cheryl liked working at her own pace, knowing that help was only a phone call away should she need it, and this put her at ease.

“I was able to concentrate on my studies and not worry about driving to school or maintaining a set schedule. When I had the time I could study, and if I wanted to commit to longer hours I could complete the program sooner.”

In Cheryl’s case, she wanted to get the program done “now” so she rapidly progressed through the program.

Cheryl is now working full-time as a clinic and ER coder at her local community clinic.

“I am responsible for coding three clinics and the ER. The facility has just received a huge grant to get going with an electronic medical record, which in a few years down the road would give me the flexibility of working at home, if I choose. I am just thrilled.”
