Your Career as a Medical Coder -- What's it all About?

As a medical coder, you will assign specific codes to diagnoses and procedures to help doctors or medical facilities get reimbursed from insurance companies. It’s a behind-the-scenes career that is an essential part of accurate billing and record-keeping within the health care industry.

Medical coders are detail-oriented, accurate and thorough, and work in a comfortable office setting at a desk with a computer. There is no direct contact with patients – making it the perfect way for you to transition into the health care industry in an administrative capacity.

Medical coders usually work a 40-hour week, but there are part-time and variable positions available – making it possible to balance work and family needs with a rewarding career.

Some of your duties might include:

  • Gathering patient information from physicians
  • Checking medical charts for accuracy and completion
  • Utilizing computer software to analyze data
  • Using official coding guidelines to translate a medical symptom, diagnosis or procedure into codes
  • Forwarding information to insurance providers to get compensation for the health care provider

Your coworkers in the medical field, among others, will be doctors, nurses and physician assistants. It’s no secret that these pros are dedicated to helping patients live better, healthier lives. And so you’ll be part of a team that goes to work every day with the intention of making a difference in people’s lives.
